What Is Durs Rhinoceros?

In 1938, a Dutch East India Company officer adopted a baby rhino whose mother had been killed by hunters. She was immediately exhibited in the low countries and wowed crowds in Rotterdam; she toured Europe for 17 years. A young Salvador Dali grew up thinking that rhinoceros had breastplates and rivets and incorporated them into some of his surrealist canvases. Women in France start to wear their wigs in rhino-like shapes.
