The Voynich Manuscript
In 1919, William Newbold announced that he had successfully solved the Voynich manuscript's riddle. He asserted that each character was in fact composed of several tiny letters of an ancient Greek script. Some of the individual tiny characters were rearranged, swapping places with their neighbors. A simple type of encryption, called an anagram, already known by the Middle Ages. Yet not long after his conclusions some researchers cast serious doubts on his claims.
