Believing is assenting to a truth that you don't have direct access to. Knowing properly speaking, is when you actually have direct access through your own experience. So these are the four classical modes by which your mind can be related to a proposition according to aquinas and others in this tradition. You'd find this in the summa theologia, for example, doubting, supposing or opining, knowing and believing.
