Is There a Way to Make Money as a Professional Musician?

I don't like the idea of a tiny cash register going to Ching every time I hit play. But I also think that we are coming into an age where it's really hard to make a living as a professional musician, and something needs to give. The market for how many people actually purchase songs versus paying for these license seem to be shifting now.
