The problem with avant-garde, at least the potential problem is that it's very difficult to dismiss the notion that you're being played for a fool by tricksters and jokesters and frauds. So I think part of people's hesitancy and unwillingness to throw themselves into something that's truly new is the suspicion that the emperor has no clothes. There is an overwhelming likelihood that what you're going to hear might not be of the highest standard.
