The Origins of Athens

According to legend, Athens' first king was the demigod sea crops. The Perian Chronicle dates his reign to the latter part of the 16th century BC. It was customary for Indo-European peoples to claim a particular god as their patron. So under his reign, Athens and Poseidon supposedly held a contest for who would be the patron deity for the yet unnamed city. Athena became the city's primary deity.
