Even if you and i go to the same school, we may not actually interact with each other. If people never even exist in the same space, they obviously also cannot be friends. But just putting them the same spaces doesn't mean that they necessarily become friends. So we need to think a little more than just putting people in the same school or college - create opportunities for them to make these connections and become friends. Because only then do we see does benefit.

By looking at data gathered from billions of Facebook friendships, researchers have shown that having more connections with people from higher income groups could increase future incomes by 20%. They also show how such connections can be formed, and how schools and other institutions could help to improve peoples’ opportunities in the future.
