The Anti-Slavery Pursuit of Happiness
The line that all men are created equal became a rallying cry for abolitionists after independence was declared. Prince Hall, a free African-American in Boston, quotes from the language of the Declaration and submitted a petition to the Massachusetts General Assembly seeking the abolition of slavery. And by 1780, slavery's been abolished in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Vermont.
