Wimbledon's Stance Devalues the Principle of Meritocracy

Venus Williams wrote an op-ed piece in 2006 saying she felt Wimbledon's stance devalued the principle of meritocracy. Her words ended up being used in Parliament during a government debate on the topic. The then Prime Minister Tony Blair got behind it as well. In 2007, for the first time, Wimbledon awarded equal prize money to women and it was Venus Williams lifting her fourth trophy that became the first woman to collect equal prize money.
