Hirschfeld's Institute for Sexual Research was destroyed by the Nazis. His records were destroyed once Hitler came into power. Hirschfeld helped one of his transgender patients, Elb, transition to a woman. She underwent cosmetic surgery but wanted implanted ovaries and a uterus. Her body rejected the new womb and she died of heart failure in 1931.
