The Infiniteness of Reality
Barfield was influenced by Gnosticism and Neil Platonism through Coolridge, the Romantic poet who also engages in some important philosophy. D. Fisuthia makes very clear Barfield's deep indebtedness to early Romantics or post-contians like Schlegel. The idea is that the inexhaustableness of reality continually draws us into self-transcendence. This is what is meant by poesis, what we translate as poetry.
