The tradition says starting with Socrates, that when you do injure someone or act unjustly, you actually injure yourself more than the recipient of your injustice. And why is this? It's because justice belongs to one's being or soul. It's to be a virtue. To be a thief is to act viciously. That means the opposite of virtue. And therefore you are diminishing your soul. And this is the greater harm. If you're a classical educator or a parent, this is worth pursuing with your students and children. What happens to a person when they habitually engage in say thievery or lying or lust or or or violence or or a host of other vices?"
