The Origins of the Word Girl
The word girl appears in English around 1300 and its etymology is pretty tricky. In the early 16th century it starts to be used specifically of female people. Professor Jennifer Higginbottom has shown that it takes another 150 years or so to become the word for a female chart. She points out often women are called girls when they're doing things that kind of challenge conventional expectations.
