If it weren't for the asteroid wiping out the dinosaurs, do you think that mammals would have survived to today? No, that had to happen for mammal evolution. That's when the explosion, like the mammals came above ground and they were able to diversify and form shape in species. If the dinosaurs hadn't died, none of that would have happened.
