I was actually in tears when I left his office. And then when I went to meet with the chair of the philosophy department, none of that stuff even came up. He took me around and introduced me to everyone in the department. That encounter had such a massive impact on the trajectory that I took. As teachers, we may not realize the impact that we're having on our students when we converse with them. Every single encounter that we have with students can seriously make or break that students sense of confidence and sense of self. But I will say I am hosting the David Foster Wallace conference here at Gettysburg in June.
