Is the FTC Using Government Guarantee Deposits to Attract Deposits?
Bob Greene: Regulators don't want banks paying up 5, 6, 7, 8% using government guarantee to get money. He says it's very difficult to raise deposits independently by giving away something on the other side. Greene: If a bank wants to do anything else, you know, like open up a barber shopper, it has to go ask permission.
