Growing Communities Through Great Decisions with David Siegel

CHAPTER

Community Builders

Community builders, similar to you, have a natural inclination to be hands off. When we became more didactic and telling people about hat to do, it was limiting the different options that people should be focused on. We're not going to have you make thoses decisions. There gong to be suggestions, um, suggestions vers decisions. And finally, what's the future for meat up? Where are things going? Is it all moving to the metaverse, or what? God, i hope not.

Thers a lot of relevante in what you're describing for community builders, for anyone who's in leader aposition, i think community builders, similar to you, have a natural inclination to be hands off. Let people create, give them ownership, give them autonomy. But what you're saying, if i understand correctly is like that works when the system is working, because you can give them autonomy within that system. Like churt e, know the direction we're going. We know over all the constraints, run within those constraints. But the system is not working, you have to change a constraints. And that means essentially like taking

on more control yourself and explaining the kias. When we became more didactic and telling people about hat to do, and limiting the different options that people should be focused on and engineers should be focused on, we were very honest and we said, for right now, we need to be a little bit more top down, for even a lot more top down, in what you were focusing on. It doesn't mean we dn't want your opinions. Just means we're going to be more top down, but we still want to create the structure for you to make gestions, and they'll evaluate those suggestions, but those are suggestions. We're not going to have you make thoses decisions. There gong to be suggestions,
Speaker 2
um, suggestions vers decisions. I like that a lot. Ah, there's a conversation to be had here around this world of decentralization. Now, endows and leaderless organization s and whether or not that would work,
Speaker 1
i think it's, it will be very challenged.
Speaker 2
Eh? I agree. And finally, what's the future for meat up? Where are things going? Is it all moving to the metaverse, or what? God,
Speaker 1
i hope not. Ime. We're hunter gatherers in our d and a ten thousand hundred thousand years we've been hunter gathers. We've had community as part of our fabric for our entire lives. We've got inperson in our fabric our entire lives. To me, that one of my favorite things is really getting an understanding of someone's energy and building that relationship. And i don't think that happens the same way through azumer latop as it happens directly in person. So yes, of course, there's going to be more virtual events than ever. Heres be more global events than ever, which is a great thing, because it's much easier to have a global event to day than ever before. There's opportunity to connect people from different parts of the world that had never been able to be connected. Is an opportunity to help people who are in more under privileged areas to be able to get access to information through virtual than ever before, versus having to pay for an expensive train ride into expensive parts of the city, you know, et cetera. But you cannot build relationships in the same way on line as you in person. And one of the most beautiful things in life is the ability to build relationships. It helps personally. It helps professionally. It helps in every single thing that we do. It's one of the most important causes towards happiness, is the relationships that you have. That harvard, the biggest harvard study, over a hundred years going, has looked over all hundreds of different factors towards happiness. And numver one, the relationships that people have. And impersones forever, and a hoply med up is forever as well.
