In 1896, A.W.R.E. Smith built a calorimeter big enough to put a human inside. For two weeks he was in there mainly sitting, reading, eating hamburger steak and potatoes. He also had to study for his exams, which led to the discovery that cogitation was a form of consumption of energy as well. Stories about this spread all across the country.
