The word that is translated as forgiveness from the Greek New Testament mostly is the word afimi. It means to like to set at a distance, to set loose or to set free. The idea of gift and exchange in the modern words we use to translate the ancient words. So if we think of forgiveness not as a debt that needs repaying, but rather that we try to move away from our heart? That's where I want to lean into the alternative etymology.
