As Margaret Thatcher came in, and into the early 80s, she tries to privatise British industry that we're already not doing very well. The North of England is all organised labour on all big industries - it's one big version of the Soviet Union. In that whole period moving through from middle to high school, pretty much every industry in my town closes down mass unemployment. By the time I left school in 1984, trying to think about what to do next, the unemployment crisis is just crippling.
