Middle Ages believed that spirits were capable of assuming temporary bodies. St. Thomas Aquinas reasons that their temporary bodies are condensed out of air, so he calls them aerial bodies. It could just be a form of psychokinesis allowing them to create solid forms and manipulate light like holograms on the holodeck or star-track.
