What's Happening Underneath the Plates?

Underneath the plates is not what often you see pictures of in books. It's hot rock, and hot rock has no strength. So that allows cold rocks which are at the surface of the Earth to slide over top of them. As it moves, things have to get out of the way, and that's why these plates are sliding around. But they're not moving in a liquid state, but as a very soft solid.
