The Humility of Porphyry

Augustine has a word of praise for porphyry. He said that he's not sure this is the right interpretation, but this is how he thinks probably the passage should be read in porphyry's work. Porphyry did not probably assume the authority of a teacher. In order to direct the Egyptians mind to these things, true religion, and the errors and the Egyptians own religion, porphyry assumed the character of an inquire or one desiring to learn.
