For the Want of a Horse, the Rider Is Lost
The horse's shoe starts to come loose. The messenger knows she has to reach the army with the commander's letter, or they'll all be lost. A lazy apprentice hadn't been paying attention when he started working on it. He should have thrown it back into the forge and reheated the iron until it was glowing reddish orange. Instead, he hammered it cold, and as a result, the nail was brittle and crooked. For the want of a good nail, the horseshoe is lost.
