Talking Politics Podcast - The End of Empire

I think there's an interesting contrast here with the end of empire because one of the reasons why decolonization wasn't more traumatic for Britain was that there was a readily available story. The idea that Britain had always been nurturing its colonies towards independence and had been preparing them for independent statehood. Now there isn't as far as I can see a story like that by which England can make sense of the loss of Scotland or Wales or Northern Ireland. That increases the danger that the response to the breakup of the union if that's what happens in England is one dominated by resentment and anger rather than some more optimistic piece of storytelling.
