The Roman Empire and Its Characteristics
After the collapse of the Roman Empire, there was never a reunification that was very long standing. And so, you had a military aristocracy that persisted and many of them famously stayed illiterate for a long time. It really took many, many centuries for the same level of kind of like civility to ever come back. In China, it was different because basically, imagine if the Roman Empire came back after 300 years, or 200 years,. And then fell and then came back.
