Pujol's Disinformation on D-Day
Pujol told the Nazis that every spy in his network was now focused on D-Day. The objective was to convince the Nazis that the main target of the invasion would not be the beaches of Normandy, but 150 miles north-east at the Paducale. Operation Fortitude required the invention of an entire fake American army of 150,000 men under the command of General George Patton poised to invade Calais. By keeping substantial numbers of the Nazi armed forces away from the Allied invasion force, it saved innumerable lives. In July 1944, Pujol was given a military honour for his contribution to the battlefield.
