Al-Shabaab still controls large parts of the country where it runs a parallel government. Van der Felber Brown says living in those circumstances is a deeply complex situation because many feel they don't have an alternative. Clans continue to be the principal source of security and access, economic access, political access for the vast majority of Somalis. The clans at the same time are major source of conflict, contestation, outright violence in Somalia as well as discriminatory.
