Lucius cornelius sulla marched on rome at the head of an army in order to force a resolution that was by that point impossible through any normal political process. In their rage, sulla's troops seize the legates who came to demand sulla's resignation, and they stone them to death. Sulla didn't have to tell them where to go; he let them choose the course of action. But after telling the story this far, we have only reached the beginning. And with mithridates still flooding through the east unchecked, it looked as though darker days were ahead.
