Classification of Bacteria in the Economy of Nature
Bacillus pyocyanaeus produces a green to olive color on gelatin, but a brown color on potato. Different physical conditions have so powerful an influence upon these microscopic cells that their individual characters are constantly undergoing change. For practical convenience rather than academic accuracy, we may accept the simple division of the family of bacteria into three chief forms. In the lower bacteria, 1. The round cell form, or cocus, 2. The rod form, or bacillus, and 3. The thread form, or speryllum.
