Joe spent a month in an induced coma. He was dealing with both muscle atrophy and the fact that his spinal cord injury had cut the wiring for much of his diaphragm. Muscles don't work if the nerves don't relay the signal to fire. Joe's body was perfectly well hydrated through an IV but his brain was telling him different. All the nurses would give him were damp sponges to suck on.
