Do the Ends Justify the Means?

The terms dystopian and Orwellian are the first two things that come to mind when we start looking into this. The fact that people would willingly carry around a device on their body almost 24 hours a day that feeds unknown collectors, whether it's for marketing or anything else. We willingly pay to do that. So do the ends justify the means? I don't think they do because you start disestablishing the fundamentals of your society when you go down that road.
