What the Heck Happened to the Great Library of Alexandria?
The great library of alexandria was not destroyed in one cataclysmic fire. The story may have been attractive to moslems and christians for different reasons. After the ptolemaic period it steadily declined in both prestige and importance. As more libraries started popping up around the roman world, public libraries became considerably more common. It was in the third century a that the library really seemed to slip into complete irrelevance.
