The Myth and the History of Pino Noisas
In the 60s people were sometimes planting Pinot Noisas and Chardonnays which were not necessarily producing what they wanted. A national research program was put into place to try to identify clones that would produce a sufficient alcohol, a good balance of acidity. It's at least a 12 or 15 or 20 year process before having identified a good mother vine. You end up having grapes from it and wine from it. There was a lot of grey rot problems in the 60s and the 70s. I remember the harvest of 67s, 68 where there was a terrific amount of grey rot. The Hospice to Bone auction was cancelled in 1968 because the grapes were so unhealthy but
