CHAPTER

The Battle Between Eros and Thanatos

The drive of eros is a fixation we all have on life, survival and creation. Thanatos is that part of your psychology that makes you want to create a great symphony after death. To freud, the two of these are in constant conflict and are irreconcilable. Marcusa thinks one thing freud failed to consider is that aros and thanatos are always developed in the mind of an individual within a particular social framework. And that the battle between these two drives has been created historically by us for the benefit of society.
