The History of the Rose

In western culture, the rose tends to be viewed first and foremost as a romantic symbol. The reasons for its modern day status can be traced back to one specific garden. It's the garden of the Chateau de Marmeissom, about 15 kilometers west of Paris. Josephine grew all kinds of exotic plants, and even built a heated greenhouse for her pineapples. She also had a collection of animals, including kangaroos, zebras, and ostriches which were allowed to roam the grounds.
