Nathan: Leadbelly is a particular guy because he's like this kind of songster, right? He's whatever rules you have about folk or blues or however you want to chart that out musically. Nathan: The real trick of it is that it's basically just kind of regional styles and a lot of them were based on just kind of who recorded at the time. And I think some of it is like confronting this idea of ownership. It only becomes important around 1923 when music starts to get recorded.
