The History of Optics

Hans Holbein's The Ambassadors is famous for having an anamorphic skull in it. Charles Falco claims that Hans Holbein achieves this extraordinary image by repeatedly refocusing the projector to overcome its limited depth of field. If you go to the British Museum, you can look at the Holbein skull and the curators have nicely given us a hole to look at. It forces you to look at a grazing angle for your eye to deconstruct a smeared out blur on the painting to realize it's actually a skull.
