The Bipartisan Nature of the Church Committee

Howard Baker, John Tower and Barry Goldwater were all on the church committee. Mike Mansfield was really an old school guy who believed that the investigation of the CIA and the intelligence committee would not be credible unless it was bipartisan. Even though they had a 60 boat majority in the Senate he made it so that there was only one more Democrat than Republican on the Senate on the committee. One of the interesting things that we interviewed many many surviving staffers and people who worked with the church committee every one of them had said that Barry even if they didn't agree with his politics Goldwater was polite and professional to work with.
