What unified all these groups musically there in the late 80s and early 90s was a certain eccentricity, a whimsy or at least a lightheartedness that was often misread as softness. Internal camaraderie was a crucial element. With some exceptions, Queen Latifah, Mone Love, She-El-E, most of the groups in this larger group were duos like Black Sheep or more commonly Trios like De La Sol or a tribe called Quest.
