The Relationship Between Buddhism and the State

The relationship of Buddhism and the state, at this time, was far from separate. Powerful temples were still very influential during Japan's civil wars. The so-called Danka system started in early 1610s starting in Nagasaki and its surrounding areas. It essentially mandated that everyone in Japan be a Buddhist templeer regardless of their local parishioners.
