Billy Corgan was going through a lot of emotional struggles while we were rehearsing. I had some problems with drug abuse. James and Darcy had their own problems. We had individual breakdowns together, and that took the focus away from the band. But to Billy's credit, he also said this in 93. Someone asked him, isn't the songwriting basically your department? And he said, it is and it isn't. A band is four people, four souls that feed into a kind of collective mood.
