The Origins of Paleontology
Paleontology was less than 100 years old as a scientific discipline when Marsh and Coke began their acrimonious dispute. With Europe established as paleontology's birthplace, North America is playing catch-up. The first specimens determined to have come from dinosaurs on the continent were found in 1855.
