Bruce Nickel and Stella Nickel
Stella Nickel's husband Bruce died of pulmonary ampusima, a lung disease. The autopsy report ruled his cause of death as hypertension due to cardio-respiratory collapse. In 1979, he went on a two-week bender, skipping work and rarely going home. When Stella confronted him at the bar, it was like a switch-flicked in Bruce's mind. He signed up as an inpatient for a program for alcoholics. Over the following 10 days, Bruce participated in cancelling and aversion therapy. On the 10th day, he walked out of the program,. From that day on, Bruce Nickel never drank alcohol again.
