Athens and the Plague
Thucydides was in the city when the plague arrived. Estimates of the infection fatality rate vary. Some say a fourth of all, Athenians died,. some say a third, some estimates range as high as two thirds. From what we understand, almost everyone got the disease. It seems to have been highly contagious; it sickened the population and killed a great number. And most importantly, in looking at the war, it completely demoralized the Athenians.
