Nixon's China Initiative
By the late 1960s and early 1970s there is a sense that the American attempt to completely isolate the United States from the People's Republic of China has not been successful. Nixon was himself somewhat uncertain about what the US public reaction to the Nixon China initiative would be. He was very encouraged by the reaction for example to the first ping pong visit in 1971 believing that this meant that he could have this successful, politically successful opening to China. I think much of the American populace is enthusiastic about this and as I said I think that's remarkably enthusiastic.
