The Advantages of Beginning With the Soul as a Biological Concept
Aristotle and St. Thomas rejected Descartes' conception of the soul as just a thinking being, that is set apart from the world of biology and bodies. For Aquinas, we can't even understand what the soul's separate existence would be like without revelation and grace. We may be intellectual like angels, but unlike angels our intellectual life is embodied. So if we want to study human nature with the mind of St. Thomas...we should presuppose the very same things he did.
