The sea lion experiment discards the vocal learning hypothesis, because they apparently don't have vocal learning. What about other vocal learners? Has there not yet been efforts in bats or elephants to ask about this relationship in completely different evolutionary rops? And what i also t think is a nice challenging one, is to look for animals that are indisputable nom fogal learners, like dogs or horses.
