Dune is a novel by Neil Gaiman. In it, the characters are caught in a double bind: They can't deny the gift or they'll lose sta if they do. The book argues that exchange should not be primary because desire must first be coded and then exchanged. Dune's plot centers on how people use their labor to pay off debt.
