CHAPTER

The Red Flags of Surgery

When you're closing a VSD, no matter what the VSD is, it's a communication between the left and the right ventricle. As a result, these patients should be a little hypertensive, often a lot hypertensive. Hypertension would be expected; Normal tensions find hypotension after a VSD repair not common. And then, of course, bleeding. Just look at the chest tubes. Are they just sort of putting out gently? Is it really red or is it already starting to dilute? There's a lot of information you could learn in those first few minutes when they come back.
